Danny: Hi everyone, today I'm going to show you how to teach the "Leave It" command. This is one of the most important safety commands your puppy can learn.
Step 1: Start with Low Value
Begin with a treat in your closed fist. Your puppy will likely sniff, lick, and paw at your hand. Don't say anything—just wait. The moment they back away or stop trying, mark it with "Yes!" and give them a treat from your other hand.
Step 2: Add the Cue
Once your puppy consistently backs away from your closed fist, start saying "Leave It" before they make the right choice. This pairs the behavior with the verbal cue.
Step 3: Increase Difficulty
Now place a treat on the floor, covering it with your hand. Say "Leave It" and wait for them to back away. Gradually remove your hand for longer periods before rewarding.
Step 4: Real-World Practice
Practice with different objects in different locations. Remember, dogs don't generalize well, so you need to practice everywhere!
Pro Tip: Never chase your dog if they've grabbed something. Instead, trade them for something better. This teaches them that bringing things to you results in good things, not punishment.
